About Nebraska Children's Home Society

About Our Organization

Nebraska Children's Home Society is a non-profit, non-sectarian agency, accredited through Council on Accreditation for Children and Family Services (COA) to provide an array of children and family programs including pregnancy, parenting, adoption and post-adoption services; foster care; teen parenting services; and early childhood programming. NCHS is licensed by the state of Nebraska as a Child Placing Agency and a Child Care Agency. The organization provides services across the state of Nebraska with 10 offices in nine cities.

Pregnancy, Parenting, and Adoption Services provide education and support services for anyone experiencing an unplanned pregnancy. Prenatal classes and parenting programs, as well as adoption services, help individuals make the best decision for themselves and their child. A 24/7 toll-free number provides immediate access to a professional Pregnancy, Parenting and Adoption staff member. The NCHS Adoption University Curriculum has been used in over 200 elementary, middle and high schools in Nebraska, as well as in other states.

Post Adoption Services provide education, support, and search and reunion services for all members of the adoption triad. With more than 115 years of experience serving adoptive families, NCHS has developed a unique capacity to help individuals and families anticipate and resolve issues that are adoption specific; to help individuals and families separate adoption issues from normal developmental challenges; and to address the interface of adoption issues and behavioral health issues. Recognizing that adoption is a lifelong process, NCHS provides comprehensive, high quality, lifelong post adoption services for members of the adoption triad (the child, the adoptive family and the birth family). Those services are designed to:

  • Provide information, education and support to help families anticipate issues, behaviors and concerns that are normal for those who are members of an adoptive triad.
  • Assist in early identification and assessment of problems that interfere with healthy development or may even threaten the stability of the family.
  • Offer a range of resources to help individuals cope with emotional and behavioral stressors.
  • Assist families at time of crisis.
  • Provide screening and assessment services and develop recommendations based on the findings.
  • Provide short term behavioral health intervention if needed.
  • Link individuals and families with specialized services as needed.
  • Provide training and consultation to other professionals regarding adoption related factors that may impact children and families in the schools, the courts, or behavioral health treatment.

The Foster Care Program specializes in providing loving homes for children of all ages. This includes children with special needs, children with fetal alcohol syndrome, medically fragile infants and children, and children waiting for organ transplants. In addition to serving children from Nebraska, children from other states are referred to the NCHS program so that they can live with a family while receiving treatment at one of Omaha's medical centers.

Early Childhood Programs focus on the goal of school readiness by developing cognitive, social, and life skills while providing quality child care for working parents.

The Children and Family Center provides an array of services for families with children at the organization's historic Fontenelle Boulevard location in North Omaha. Program components include neighborhood outreach; early childhood services; teen mentoring; and support and skill training for parents, grandparents and other caretakers.
